Tottenham Trees: part of a global movement to protect our natural heritage
The inspiration for Tottenham Trees was Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan Nobel Peace Laureate and environmental activist who planted seven trees in honour of historical community leaders on World Environment Day 1977. This led to the Green Belt Movement in Kenya which planted trees on land which was being deforested in controversial land grabs; women were encouraged and supported to plant nurseries of trees throughout the country.
In Tottenham seven trees were planted in a ring over 400 years ago for reasons lost in time; the Seven Sisters area and the underground station are named after them. The seven trees have been replanted a number of times, always by seven sisters. The current trees were planted in 1996 by the newly formed Tree Trust for Haringey.
Local residents with a love of trees and keen to support the Tree Charter are organising tree events around Tottenham.
Join Catherine, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Glynis, Margaret, Noel, Peter and Stephen in promoting the Tree Charter.
