The First Seven TreesOn 5 June 1977 Kenya marked World Environment Day with a tree planting ceremony in the Kamukunji Park in central Nairobi. Seven trees were planted in honour of seven people from different ethnic groups, who were leaders in their communities before the arrival of the British. They had resisted the colonial administration and fought for restoration of lands and political and economic freedom.
The Leaders commemorated were: Wangu wa Makeri Waiyaki wa Hinga Madam Ketilili Masaku Ngei Nabongo Mumia Ole Lenana Gor Mahia wuod Ogalo These seven trees formed the first 'green belt'. |
