The challenge: threats to our trees

  • Infrastructure development
  • Pollution and climate change
  • Pests and diseases
  • Cuts to public investment for forest research and conservation
  • 60% of wildlife species are in decline across the UK.
  • Decline in enrolments in forestry education
  • It’s estimated that by 2050, 80% of the population will live in cities, and yet we’re planting fewer trees than the amount we’re losing.
  • Land development on urban woodlands

We’re not even planting enough trees to replace those we have lost

The Tree Council launched their annual Tree Care Campaign on 21st March.
The campaign highlights the need for better care for all trees, in order to ensure
their survival and increase the number reaching maturity.

Tree Preservation Orders can be made by a local planning authority in England to protect specific trees, groups of trees or woodlands in the interests of amenity.   To find out more click here.

In Tottenham seven trees were planted in a ring over 400 years ago for reasons lost in time; the Seven Sisters area and the underground station are named after them. The seven trees have been replanted a number of times, always by seven sisters.

The Tottenham Trees logo, shown on the right, is a silhouette of the Bruce Castle Oak with the logo of the Charter for Trees, Woods and People launched in November 2017, on the 800th anniversary of the Royal Charter of the Forest.
